Speakeasies, Surfing, and Smarter Social Strategy
This Week at Ponto Beach Club - February 7th Edition
If it’s your first time here, welcome to the Ponto Beach Club.
If you’re not familiar with the name, it’s a beach in South Carlsbad and one of my favorite surf spots.
I am on a mission to connect great humans to create successful outcomes.
Read on for my weekly slice of sneakers-on-the-sidewalk insight into the SD business community.
Where My Heads At This Week 👇
First off, the line between ‘being social’ and ‘social spamming’ is getting grayer.
Second, I generally don’t second guess there’s a shark below me when I am surfing.
Obey the 80/20 rule on LinkedIn…
The ungodly amount of posts from people on here promoting a product they are selling is mind bending. Start with promoting YOU!
Most of us really don’t care what you do for work. I am far more intrigued about who you are. Can I trust you? Can I invest in you? Could I see myself having coffee with you?
That’s how it all starts. Don’t tell me you sell insurance, want my financial planning business or think that your SaaS software is going to change the way I do business. I’m not saying it won’t, but it’s highly unlikely you’ll get a response from me or anyone else.
Invite me to an event I’d be interested in attending. Tell me something valuable you’ve learned that might relate to what I’m working on. But for goodness sake, don’t lead with a sales pitch.
Spend 80% of your time here talking about you, your network and providing knowledge to others through comments and your posts. And the other 20% of your time carefully weaving what you do professionally into that “YOU” story.
Connect with people you’re engaging with, provide relevant feedback and stay consistent in your approach.
It won’t happen overnight. But I will tell you what will… getting blocked by someone that has no interest in being sold by someone they don’t know or trust.
Speaking of parties, I am super fun to bring along… all I need is a wig and Hawaiian shirt!

North County Spotlight
Dylan is a friend and one of the smartest humans I know. I’m not sure how I feel about lab-grown food, but I agree with Dylan that it’s here to stay.

I caught up with Lou Cooperhouse the ceo of BlueNalu at TechCon SoCal last week. I think I'll still be going on the cow boats every summer to bring home my blue fin, but 75% of the worlds supply goes to Japan. Lab grown food is here to stay and can supplement and drive regularity while lowering industrial and sport fishings impact on natural supply.
I shot this pod on a Advanced Image Robotics robo cam, and I'll be shooting on one at NAMM this week too if you want to scope it out.
We couldn't figure out the sound in time for the interview so I shot a POV shot as a back up. Let me know what you think about how it turned out.
What’s Next at Ponto Beach Club?
I’m hosting a private ‘speakeasy-style’ Happy Hour at a coastal speakeasy for local mfg and ops leaders.
📅 DATE: February 18th at 5:30pm - 8pm
📍 LOCATION: (secret speakeasy), Encinitas, CA
No sales pitches. Just good drinks, better stories, and maybe a wig if the mood strikes. If you’re in the North County manufacturing scene, hit reply, and I’ll get you an invite with the address.
Until next week,
Jeran Fraser
